Muay Thai

TAUGHT BY JP

Muay Thai, which translates to “Thai Boxing”, is the national sport of Thailand. It is a martial art with roots originating from military use dating back to around the 13th century during the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom.

Muay Thai is known as the “Art of 8 limbs” because it makes use of 8 points of contact (punches, elbows, knees and kicks). This differentiates the style from other stand-up combat sports such as boxing and karate. Muay Thai also allows upright grappling (the clinch) and certain types of sweeps. Today, Muay Thai is practiced and competed in not only in Thailand, but all around the world.

At Cool Heart, we practice traditional stadium Muay Thai with a heavy focus on well-rounded technique. Every session begins with shadowboxing and warmup routines, followed by a combination of technical drills, padwork, clinching, and live sparring

Technical drills are used to introduce students to techniques and concepts, before practicing these concepts in freestyle pad rounds. We also spend time teaching theories of padholding and ringcraft. Live clinching and sparring is used for all students to enact what they have learned in a practical setting. All live sparring is conducted in a playful, safe and technical way, with constant supervision from the coach.
